Why gold loves a crisis

7 cards and 4 quick questions. About 2 min.

The lesson in full

  1. People have treasured gold for thousands of years. In October 2025 it passed US$4,000 an ounce for the first time.

  2. No government can print gold, and it can't go bankrupt. When people fear crashes, wars or inflation, money often runs to it. That's why it's called a safe haven.

  3. Gold, 2007 to 2011 (monthly averages), through the global financial crisis. Its yearly average price more than doubled, from about US$700 an ounce in 2007 to about US$1,570 in 2011.

  4. Gold pays no interest. When real interest rates (rates minus inflation) rise, savings and bonds look better and gold can lose its shine. A stronger dollar often weighs on it too.

  5. Gold is priced in US dollars. If your peso, rupiah or rupee weakens against the dollar, gold priced in your money rises even more.

  6. Common mistake

Myth: gold always goes up in a crisis. Reality: it can fall for years. Its average price dropped about 40% from late 2011 to the end of 2015.

  7. Key takeaway

Gold is a shelter for fear, not a sure win. Watch real interest rates, the dollar and your own currency.
