What is a pip?

A pip ("percentage in point") is the standard unit for a price move in forex. For most currency pairs it is the fourth decimal place, 0.0001: if EUR/USD moves from 1.1200 to 1.1201, it moved one pip. For pairs quoted in Japanese yen it is the second decimal place, 0.01: USD/JPY from 158.20 to 158.21 is one pip. Many brokers show one more decimal, a fractional pip or "pipette" (0.00001 or 0.001).

Outside forex the word is used loosely. In this calculator one pip is 0.01 for gold, 0.001 for silver, 0.01 for oil (one cent a barrel) and 1 point for stock indices. Some brokers use 0.10 for gold, so you can change the pip size under Contract details. Learn more in the glossary: pip and lot.

The pip value formula

Pip value = pip size × trade size in units × conversion rate

The pip value is first worked out in the pair's quote currency (the second currency). If your account is in another currency, it is converted at the current rate. For a pair whose base currency is your account currency (USD/JPY with a US dollar account), the conversion uses the pair's own price: pip value = pip size × units ÷ price.

Worked examples

  • EUR/USD, US dollar account, 1 standard lot (100,000 units): 0.0001 × 100,000 = US$10 per pip. Every pair that ends in USD has this US$10 value for a US dollar account.
  • USD/JPY at 158.19, US dollar account, 0.5 lots (50,000 units): 0.01 × 50,000 = ¥500 per pip, and ¥500 ÷ 158.19 = US$3.16 per pip.
  • GBP/USD, Indonesian rupiah account, 0.1 lots (10,000 units), USD/IDR at 17,895: 0.0001 × 10,000 = US$1, which is Rp17,895 per pip.
  • EUR/GBP, euro account, 1 lot, EUR/GBP at 0.8445: 0.0001 × 100,000 = £10, and £10 ÷ 0.8445 = €11.84 per pip.
  • Gold (XAU/USD), 1 lot = 100 ounces: 0.01 × 100 = US$1 per pip, so a US$10 move in the gold price (1,000 pips) is US$1,000 on one lot.

Lot sizes

  • Standard lot: 100,000 units of the base currency (100 ounces of gold, 1,000 barrels of oil).
  • Mini lot: 0.1 lots, 10,000 units.
  • Micro lot: 0.01 lots, 1,000 units. A good size for learning with real money, if you ever do.

Why traders check the pip value

  • Risk in money, not in pips. A 30-pip stop loss is US$3 on a micro lot and US$300 on a standard lot. Only the money figure tells you if you can afford it.
  • Position sizing. Divide the amount you are willing to lose by (stop distance in pips × pip value per lot) to get the lot size. Practise it in the lesson How much to risk.
  • Comparing markets. One pip on USD/JPY, gold or the US 500 is worth very different amounts. The calculator puts them on the same scale.
  • Your own currency. If your account is in rupiah, pesos or rupees, the calculator converts every value for you.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 pip worth on EUR/USD?

With a US dollar account, one pip on EUR/USD is worth US$10 for 1 standard lot (100,000 units), US$1 for a mini lot and US$0.10 for a micro lot. In another account currency it is the same amount converted at the current rate.

What is a pip in USD/JPY?

For yen pairs one pip is 0.01, not 0.0001. On 1 standard lot of USD/JPY a pip is worth ¥1,000. At a price of 158.19 that is about US$6.32 (1,000 ÷ 158.19).

How many pips is a US$1 move in gold?

In this calculator one pip for gold is 0.01, so a US$1 move is 100 pips. One standard lot of gold is 100 ounces, so each pip is worth US$1 and a US$1 move is worth US$100. Brokers that use 0.10 as a gold pip count the same US$1 move as 10 pips.

What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?

A pipette is one tenth of a pip: the fifth decimal on most pairs (0.00001) and the third decimal on yen pairs (0.001). A move from 1.12000 to 1.12015 is 1.5 pips, or 15 pipettes.

Why does the pip value change for some pairs?

When the quote currency is not your account currency, the pip value has to be converted at the current exchange rate, so it changes a little as that rate moves. EUR/USD with a US dollar account is fixed at US$10 per lot; USD/JPY with a US dollar account moves with the yen.
